The NCC Project
The transformation of the former Bennington County Courthouse is already taking shape—
Each milestone reached is more than progress—it’s a testament to what can happen when a community comes together to honor its past while providing for its future.
Structural Assessment
With Vermont Integrated Architecture, P.C., NCC has identified the most pressing projects, together with cost estimates. From this, a prelimary budget had been created, and a multi-phase work plan developed. Priorities for Phase One include structural integrity, ADA compliance and refurbishment of the main courtroom.
Capital Campaign Launch
Phase One of a Capital Campaign to fund the restoration has been initiated. NCC has partnered with the Preservation Trust of Vermont, giving our donors access to tax exempt status as we await acceptance of our own 501(c)3 application. NCC is also working with the Town of Manchester to enter a long-term master lease agreement for the Courthouse building. Ultimately, we plan for the completed facility to be largely self supporting.
Community Engagement
Gathering input from members of the municipal, business, educational, service and arts communities has been paramount. Their knowledge and expertise have helped to inform our initial plans. It is our goal to keep stakeholders and residents informed, involved and inspired as the project progresses. Open dialogue and collaboration are central to ensuring that the renovated Courthouse reflects the needs of our community and complements exsisting resources.
Research
We will continue to research and engage with the Preservation Trust of Vermont and other professionals in historic renovation, with a focus on similar projects regionally. Our goal is to learn from their experience and replicate their success. We are organizing site visits attended by members of our Board, Advisors, donors, prospective donors and key stakeholders. These conversations provide valuable insights, helping us adapt their ideas to meet the unique needs of our project and community.
Looking Ahead
Once architectural and engineering plans are completed, a timeline for phases of construction will be developed. In the meantime, we expect to be able to use the Courthouse for presentations by Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning, Taconic Music, the Manchester Historical Society and other organizations.
Priority construction projects will include:
Repairs to the roof, cupola and foundation
Integration of ADA requirements
Removal of the acoustical tile ceiling to reveal the original ceiling and balcony of the courtroom
Refurbishment of existing windows
Removal of wall to wall carpeting to reveal the original wood floor
Restoration of noteworthy architectural details such as stenciling, pews and lighting
Be part of the Courthouse Story
We invite all who cherish Manchester, the Green Mountains, Northshire, and the spirit of Vermont to be part of this exciting renewal. Follow our progress, share our story, and lend your support as we restore the Northshire Community Courthouse to a condition that reflects the heart of our community.
